After more than four decades with SBDS—and almost forty years as a director—it is difficult to imagine the firm without Mariki Terblanche. Yet after an extraordinary career, the time has come to wish her a well-earned and happy retirement.

Mariki graduated from the University of Cape Town with a B.Sc (Quantity Surveying) in 1977 before joining SBDS in 1984. Just three years later, she became a director, beginning a chapter of leadership that would shape not only the company, but also the people fortunate enough to work alongside her.

Throughout her career, Mariki became known for her exceptional expertise in luxury residential developments and contract administration. Her reputation as an expert witness and her deep understanding of construction law have helped guide countless projects to successful completion. Under her watch, SBDS earned a reputation for thoroughness, professionalism, and careful contract management—qualities that have enabled the firm to avoid legal disputes on its own projects for decades.

But impressive achievements tell only part of the story.

Anyone who has worked with Mariki knows that she has always believed that clients come first. She never shied away from giving honest advice, even when it was difficult, because her priority was always the long-term success of the project. Whether the challenge came from a client, contractor, or fellow professional, her integrity and sound judgement never wavered.

Mariki's passion extended far beyond the numbers. She has always been fascinated by the entire building process, from concept to completion, and her remarkable knowledge of construction methods, materials, and industry practice has made her an invaluable resource to colleagues and clients alike. Combined with an extensive network of contractors, specialists, and suppliers built over many years, her experience has often proved indispensable in solving even the most challenging problems.

Perhaps her greatest contribution, however, has been her generosity. She has always been willing to share her knowledge, mentor younger professionals, and take the time to explain not just what should be done, but why. Many within SBDS have benefited from her patience, wisdom, and willingness to invest in others.

Clients have also appreciated something increasingly rare in today's world: genuine personal service. Mariki has always preferred building relationships one person at a time, making herself available, listening carefully, and earning trust through honesty, consistency, and unwavering commitment.

As she steps into retirement, she leaves behind far more than an impressive résumé. She leaves a culture of excellence, integrity, and service that will continue to influence SBDS for many years to come.

Mariki, thank you for your dedication, your wisdom, your leadership, and your friendship. Your influence can be seen in the projects you helped deliver, the colleagues you mentored, and the standards you established for us all.

Everyone at SBDS wishes you every happiness in this new season of life. May your retirement be filled with good health, much joy, and the satisfaction of knowing that your life's work has left an enduring legacy.

Congratulations, Mariki—and thank you.
